AFCON 2025/ Egypt defy red card to secure knockout place

A Mohamed Salah penalty and resolute ten-man defence earned Egypt a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Africa, sealing their place in the AFCON knockout stages.

The decisive moment arrived controversially just before half-time. Following a VAR review, a penalty was awarded for a stray arm on Salah, who coolly converted a Panenka. Egypt’s task was immediately complicated when Mohamed Hany received a second yellow card in first-half stoppage time.

Playing the entire second half a man down, the Pharaohs defended resiliently. Goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy was pivotal, making a crucial late save from Aubrey Modiba.

South Africa’s frustration was compounded deep into added time when a handball penalty appeal against Yasser Ibrahim was dismissed after a lengthy monitor review, the referee judging his arm to be in a natural position.

Despite sustained pressure, Bafana Bafana failed to find an equaliser, leaving their qualification to be decided in the final group match.

Egypt, topping Group B, can now approach their final fixture against Angola with progression assured.
