DRC: The relaunch of Congo Airways – a strategic move by President Tshisekedi to boost national development

Congo Airways is going through a deep crisis that threatens its survival and raises questions about the ability of the Democratic Republic of Congo to manage its strategic assets. All its aircraft are grounded, debts are mounting, and management failures have brought operations to a standstill. Faced with this situation, Félix Tshisekedi has demanded an ambitious and strictly framed recovery plan, aimed at restoring the national airline as a pillar of sovereignty and a driver of economic development.

The official assessment reveals the scale of the challenge. The Embraer financed by the National Social Security Fund (CNSS) remains grounded due to a lack of pilots and spare parts, while the leased Airbus A320 is slow to enter service.

Beyond these technical issues, Congo Airways suffers from deficient management, with salary arrears and unpaid taxes, exposing the Congolese state to legal and reputational risks.

This paralysis has direct consequences on the country’s connectivity and its ability to project influence in the region.

The planned recovery aims for a deep restructuring, with strict control over financial flows and more transparent governance.

For the country, this represents a dual challenge: restoring a national symbol and creating an economic engine. A functional airline generates jobs, builds local skills, and facilitates domestic and regional trade.

It also strengthens the country’s attractiveness to investors and African partners by demonstrating that the DRC can manage its strategic infrastructure with rigor and efficiency.

The impact extends beyond Congolese borders. By revitalizing Congo Airways, the DRC asserts its ability to play an active role in African aviation, support inter-African connections, and strengthen continental cooperation.

The project underscores that economic development and sovereignty go hand in hand, and that mastering strategic tools such as an airline can serve both national interests and regional influence.

The decision of President Félix Tshisekedi reflects a clear political will to turn the crisis into an opportunity, showing that the DRC can structure its institutions and project its economic and symbolic power.

If the recovery plan is implemented rigorously, Congo Airways can once again become a concrete vehicle for development, a tool for African integration, and an emblem of Congolese ambition in the skies of the continent.
