Burkina Faso: Towards a more efficient and resilient multimodal transport system

Bobo-Dioulasso – The Bobo-Dioulasso railway station witnessed a landmark moment in Burkina Faso’s transport modernization on February 16, 2026. SITARAIL, a subsidiary of Africa Global Logistics (AGL), unveiled four GL30 diesel-electric locomotives, each developing 3,000 horsepower and capable of hauling 1,500 tons.

This deployment forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen the engine fleet and modernize operations, including the ongoing acquisition of 260 flatbed wagons, with an initial batch already in service.

Beyond technical performance, the arrival of these locomotives reveals a major institutional and strategic objective: supporting national and regional infrastructure integration.

As SITARAIL Managing Director Simplice Essoh emphasized, rail constitutes a vital economic artery.

The new GL30s become a tangible lever for major national projects, particularly Ouagadougou’s future dry port, where the railway connection will play a central role.

This upgrade also reflects the determination of Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso to consolidate rail as a driver of sub-regional integration.

The modernization of the Abidjan-Ouagadougou-Kaya network aligns with this logic, offering concrete responses to mobility and logistics needs while stimulating local economies.

AGL Regional Director Asta-Rosa Cissé noted that this investment demonstrates firm commitment to rail sustainability and community development, aligning with a pan-African vision of shared progress.

On the technical front, these locomotives incorporate computerized command systems and onboard diagnostic devices, ensuring both safety and efficiency.

Visits to the workshops of  SITARAIL and vocational training center highlight the human and structural dimensions of this modernization, reflecting the consolidation of sustainable local expertise.

The scope  of the reform extends beyond operational framework, positioning Burkina Faso within a more integrated and resilient multimodal transport dynamic capable of supporting economic growth and strengthening national logistics sovereignty.

As Minister Mikailou Sidibé recalled, each locomotive represents a milestone toward building a robust transport system capable of supporting the nation and accompanying its ambitions.

These four GL30s embody a clear vision: that of a country modernizing its infrastructure, valuing its capabilities, and charting; at high speed the contours of a more connected and ambitious economic future.
