Togo – Benin: Council President Faure Gnassingbé: proactive diplomacy in the service of peace and sub-regional integration

Once again, Lomé confirms its status as a capital of West African diplomacy. On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, received at the presidential palace the new President of the Republic of Benin, Kossi Romuald Wadagni, on a friendship and working visit to Togo.

This meeting between the two neighboring leaders perfectly illustrates the effectiveness and consistency of Togolese diplomacy in the sub-region.

Faced with security and economic challenges shaking West Africa, Togo stands out as a credible mediator and a reliable partner, able to maintain close ties with all ECOWAS member states.

During the talks, Faure Gnassingbé and Romuald Wadagni discussed matters of common interest and reaffirmed their shared will to further strengthen the bilateral partnership between Lomé and Porto-Novo.

The discussions also covered crucial regional and international issues, including cross-border security, economic integration, and sustainable development.

Through this initiative, Togo demonstrates once again that its strength lies in continuous dialogue and concrete cooperation with its immediate neighbors.

The visit by the newly installed Beninese president reflects the trust that African capitals place in Togolese mediation.

Lomé does not settle for ceremonial diplomacy; it works behind the scenes to prevent crises, ease tensions, and promote harmonious regional integration.

As the sub-region faces persistent terrorist threats and complex political transitions, the quiet yet effective leadership of Togo appears as a valuable bulwark. By cultivating friendship and cooperation across borders, Faure Gnassingbé works to build a more united, stable, and prosperous West Africa.

Through this visit, Benin has chosen to share and support that vision.
