Burkina Faso: Digital sovereignty in support of public health

The Ministry of Health has made the digital mapping of the national health system a major priority during the first 2026 ministerial sector council in Ouagadougou. The initiative aims to improve how healthcare services are planned and managed across the country.

Meanwhile, the digital mapping of health facilities will provide a clearer picture of healthcare needs in different areas. By using geolocation data, authorities can identify priority zones and better plan the distribution of medical resources.

Furthermore, the system could improve the allocation of healthcare professionals, the supply of essential medicines and the maintenance of medical equipment. Better access to reliable data can also help authorities make more informed budget decisions and respond more quickly to local health needs.

In addition, the initiative is part of Burkina Faso’s Digital Health Strategic Plan for 2025–2029. It also follows broader recommendations from the World Health Organization on the use of digital and geospatial data in healthcare.

Finally, the digitalization of the health map is intended to strengthen the country’s ability to manage its healthcare system. By relying on more accurate data, Burkina Faso aims to build a more responsive and efficient public health system that can better serve both urban and rural communities.
