Ouagadougou hosts ATAF Workshop on combating illicit financial flows

On February 11 and 12, 2025, Ouagadougou became the focal point for a pivotal workshop organized by the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), bringing together communication professionals from tax administrations across the continent. The event, attended by over 50 participants from various African countries, centered on the theme, “Strengthening Media Capacity to Cover Illicit Financial Flows.”

The workshop aimed to deepen understanding of tax-related challenges and raise awareness about ongoing reforms to combat financial crimes.

Over two days, discussions focused on demystifying modern taxation challenges and exploring innovative approaches to public communication.

Mamadou Séré, Technical Advisor at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, emphasized the workshop’s significance, noting that taxation is a critical driver of sustainable development.

“Illicit financial flows deprive our states of vital resources needed for ambitious public policies in health, education, and infrastructure,” he lamented.

Eliane Djiguemdé, Director General of Taxes, highlighted the severe economic impact of these flows. “Failing to comply with regulations when transferring funds or evading tax bases is a crime. States must collaborate to eradicate these practices,” she stressed.

Djiguemdé expressed hope that the workshop would yield concrete solutions for more effective action against illicit financial activities.

This initiative reflects a collective effort to enhance the capacity of media and tax administrations to inform and educate the public on fiscal issues, particularly the fight against illicit financial flows—a major obstacle to Africa’s development.

By fostering collaboration and innovation, the workshop seeks to empower stakeholders to address this pressing challenge and support the continent’s growth.
