Burkina Faso’s trade surplus soars to record 2,320 Billion CFA francs in under President Traoré
Burkina Faso has just crossed a major economic threshold. By the end of June 2026, the trade balance recorded a surplus of 2,320.4 billion CFA francs a level that already surpasses the entire year of 2025, which stood at 2,182.2 billion CFA francs. This performance, achieved in only six months, sends a powerful signal of the Burkinabe economy’s ongoing transformation.
Sovereignty-Driven development under President Traoré
Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, the choice of development based increasingly on national resources, economic sovereignty, and the enhancement of productive sectors appears to be yielding visible results.
The mining sector, particularly gold, remains the primary driver of exports. The IMF confirms that rising gold exports and reforms undertaken in the mining sector strongly supported economic activity in 2025.
Beyond mining: Agriculture and infrastructure
However, this momentum is not limited to mining exports. Cotton, sesame, and cashew nuts are also contributing to the growth of foreign trade.
In parallel, investments in energy and infrastructure reflect the determination to strengthen national production capacities and progressively reduce certain external dependencies. This strategic orientation is part of a coherent logic of economic sovereignty.
A Symbolic and historic achievement
2,320.4 billion CFA francs the figure is both historic and symbolic. It reflects an economy that is striving to produce more, export more, and rely more on its own strengths.
The challenge now will be to translate this exceptional surplus into jobs, industrialization, and sustainable improvements in living conditions while diversifying sources of growth to consolidate the gains achieved.
The road ahead: Turning surplus into shared prosperity
Burkina Faso’s economic trajectory is undeniably shifting. The record trade surplus is not just a statisticit is proof that sovereignty-driven policies can deliver tangible results.
Yet the real test lies ahead: ensuring that this wealth benefits all citizens, creates lasting employment, and builds a resilient economy for future generations.
With continued reforms and strategic investments, Burkina Faso is positioning itself as a rising economic force in West Africa.
