Burkina Faso/ Weekly cabinet meeting: Key decisions to address Burkina Faso’s challenges

Under President Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s leadership, this Wednesday’s cabinet meeting yielded several significant decisions aimed at tackling the nation’s pressing issues.

Higher Education boost for Dori
The government fast-tracked plans to establish a Science and Technology Faculty (UFR/ST) alongside student housing in Dori – a long-awaited project for the local university center.

Originally funded in 2020 but delayed due to land access issues, this development marks a strategic move to decentralize higher education and promote regional equity.

Security forces expansion
In security sector reforms, authorities greenlit the recruitment of 2,000 police personnel (including 50 women) for 2025, with priority given to:

  • volunteers for defense of the Homeland (VDP)
  • Auxiliary security volunteers (VADS)
  • Families of fallen security personnel

Additionally, the police hierarchy will be strengthened through competitive recruitment of 20 commissioners, 60 officers, plus 10 direct-entry specialists. Security Minister Mahamadou Sana emphasized these measures would enhance operational capacity.

Construction sector modernization
A groundbreaking reform will end the national construction laboratory’s (LNBTP) monopoly, opening testing services to private operators. Infrastructure Minister Adama Luc Sorgho explained this aims to :

  • Meet growing infrastructure demands
  • Implement mandatory technical certification
  • Establish a quality control regulatory body

The changes reflect Burkina Faso’s dual focus on immediate security needs while laying foundations for long-term development – though implementation challenges remain.
