Malian Anti-drug forces intensify crackdown in Kita region

From April 12 to 19, 2025, Malian drug enforcement units launched a major offensive against traffickers in the Kita area under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Ousmane Mamadou Sissoko. The coordinated operations resulted in significant arrests and seizures, demonstrating the government’s strengthened approach to combating drug trafficking.

Key operations and seizures
In Niefala, authorities arrested a 19-year-old male found with 250mg Tramadol tablets concealed in a bag.

Kita city saw the dismantling of an illicit medication distribution network, with officers confiscating 152 tablets of 225mg Tramadol along with other prohibited substances.

Near Sébékoro in Kassarola, three suspects were apprehended following a tip from local residents, one of whom possessed 26 bags of cannabis.

Another operation in Kita led to the arrest of a 20-year-old male carrying 45 Diazepam tablets and suspicious cash.

Growing public health concern
The crackdown comes as the region experiences rising trafficking of psychotropic substances and counterfeit medicines.

Tramadol, increasingly diverted from medical use to recreational consumption, has become a particular public health crisis, especially in rural communities where addiction rates are climbing.

Strategic approach
Lt. Col. Sissoko emphasized the crucial role of community cooperation in these successful operations, noting they form part of a comprehensive strategy to eliminate illegal drug markets that threaten both public health and socioeconomic stability.

Malian authorities pledged to enhance border controls and transit zone monitoring to stem the flow of illicit substances into the country.

Preventive measures
Alongside enforcement actions, officials plan to expand drug awareness programs in schools and communities, educating citizens about the dangers of substance abuse and counterfeit medications. Security forces continue urging public vigilance to support future anti-trafficking efforts.

These recent operations underscore Mali’s commitment to disrupting criminal networks and prioritizing the fight against drug trafficking as a national security imperative. The sustained campaign reflects growing regional concerns about West Africa’s role in global narcotics distribution networks.
