First AES Games: Bamako draws to a close with sporting success
Bamako witnessed on Friday the conclusion of the first Games of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which ended on a positive note after a week of competition bringing together Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
In U17 football, Mali dominated the final, defeating Niger 4-0 thanks to goals from Ballo, Diakité, and a brace from Bomba, securing the gold ahead of Niger and Burkina Faso.
In karate, the matches took place at the Salamatou Maïga Sports Palace. Mali topped the standings with 3 gold medals (notably Camara, Sacko, and Coulibaly), ahead of Burkina Faso and Niger.
In athletics, Mali and Burkina Faso contested the top spot with 4 gold medals each, while Niger completed the podium with 3 gold medals.
These inaugural Games, held at three venues in Bamako from June 21 to 28, saw young athletes from the three countries compete in nine disciplines. The event helped strengthen Sahelian brotherhood, promote patriotic spirit, and reveal new talents.
