Football mourns: Diogo Jota and his brother die in tragic accident in Spain

The football world is in mourning this Thursday morning following the death of Diogo Jota, the 28-year-old Portuguese international striker. The former Atlético Madrid, Porto, Wolverhampton, and Liverpool player lost his life in a road accident near Zamora, Spain. According to Marca, the tragedy occurred when a tire burst, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and catch fire. His brother, André Silva, a player for FC Penafiel, also died in the crash.

The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed the heartbreaking news. Liverpool, where Jota had played since 2020, said it was “devastated” by the sudden loss of one of its most talented and beloved players.

Born in Porto in 1996, Diogo Jota began his career at Gondomar SC before making a name for himself at Paços de Ferreira. His talent earned him a move to Atlético Madrid, followed by a loan to FC Porto. In England, he first shone with Wolverhampton before joining Liverpool. With the Reds, Jota enjoyed a successful spell, winning the Premier League in 2025, two League Cups (2022 and 2024), and an FA Cup (2022). He was also part of the Liverpool team that reached the Champions League final in 2022, where they fell to Real Madrid.

The death of Diogo Jota and his brother leaves a huge void for their families, clubs, and football fans around the world.
