President Boakai’s Governance reforms: Restoring trust in Liberia

Since assuming the presidency of Liberia, Joseph Boakai has placed good governance at the heart of his action. His program rests on reforms designed to restore citizens’ trust in public institutions, with a focus on combating corruption, promoting transparency, and strengthening the rule of law.

One of his first symbolic decisions was to reduce his own salary by 40%. This gesture reflects his determination to promote responsible management of public resources and encourage a culture of sobriety within the administration.

This measure has been widely perceived as a strong signal in favor of exemplary governance.

In the same spirit, President Boakai has strengthened transparency mechanisms by encouraging public audits within state institutions.

These audits aim to improve accountability, identify financial irregularities, and reinforce the confidence of both citizens and international partners in the management of public finances.

Furthermore, Joseph Boakai has relaunched the transitional justice process by supporting the creation of a court to judge war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during Liberia’s civil conflicts.

This initiative responds to a long-standing demand from victims and human rights organizations eager to see truth and justice prevail.

Through these various reforms, Joseph Boakai affirms his ambition to build a more transparent, more accountable, and more just Liberia.

By combining fiscal discipline, anti-corruption efforts, and the promotion of justice, he seeks to lay the foundations for sustainable governance and development founded on citizens’ trust.
