Togo: Togolese diplomacy in action promoting peace and stability in the DRC

Togo reaffirms its role as a diplomatic pillar in Africa through its active involvement in resolving the crisis in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Appointed as Mediator by the African Union, the President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, continues his efforts with consistency and determination, as illustrated by his meeting in Lomé with Huang Xia, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region.

This Togolese mediation is welcomed and supported by the United Nations. It is part of a broader initiative for peace and regional stability, aiming to align the efforts of various African organizations—particularly the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC)—around a coherent and inclusive framework.

The UN’s strong support further enhances the legitimacy and effectiveness of Togo’s approach, placing the country at the heart of conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms on the continent.

It is worth recalling that last May, the President of the Council brought together the panel of facilitators for the Rwanda–DRC crisis in Lomé. Through this initiative, Togo demonstrated its ability to unite key stakeholders and foster constructive diplomatic coordination. This proactive stance reflects the country’s vision as a key player in maintaining peace in Africa, driven by a diplomacy rooted in dialogue.
