Niger: President Abdourahamane Tiani takes strong action to protect national resources

Amid a heated controversy over the disputed sale of a Martian meteorite from Agadez to the United States, the President of the CNSP, General Abdourahamane Tiani, has signed a decree temporarily banning the export of certain mineral substances. This exceptional measure reflects the Nigerien authorities’ determination to safeguard the country’s natural and cultural heritage.

According to official information, the decree aims to prevent any illicit trafficking and to ensure that national resources—whether of mineral origin or of high scientific value—do not leave the territory without strict oversight. The Ministries of Mines, Public Security, Justice, and Higher Education have been mobilized to carry out a thorough investigation into this sensitive matter.

The government intends to meticulously verify compliance with national laws and international conventions relating to the protection of natural resources and cultural property. Investigators are focusing on the meteorite’s route and any possible collusion that may have facilitated its export.

To guarantee strict enforcement of the measure, the Defense and Security Forces have been ordered to immediately seize any mineral substances exported without prior authorization. This decisive stance underscores Niger’s resolve to dismantle the opaque networks that illegally exploit its resources to the detriment of its people.
