Togo/Niger: Enhanced energy cooperation around the Salkadamna coal project

On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the President of the Council, Faure Gnassingbé, received Niger’s Minister of Energy, Amadou Haoua, in Togo. The meeting took place within the framework of strengthening bilateral relations and energy cooperation between the two countries.

On this occasion, the Nigerien minister conveyed an official message from the President of Niger, Brigadier General Abdourahamane Tiani, to the Togolese Head of State. The message focused mainly on the progress and future prospects of the Salkadamna coal complex project, a strategic undertaking for the energy autonomy of the sub-region.

The Salkadamna complex, located in Niger, aims to harness the country’s significant coal resources to produce electricity and supply various industrial sectors. Considered one of the most ambitious projects in West Africa, it is expected to help reduce the energy dependence of WAEMU member states and stimulate their industrial development.

The meeting between the two officials reflects the shared commitment of Niger and Togo to building structural partnerships in support of regional energy sovereignty. For Lomé as well as Niamey, the stakes go beyond a strictly bilateral framework: the goal is to lay the foundations for energy integration capable of supporting growth and strengthening the economic independence of West African countries.
