Burkina Faso: Academic excellence celebrated as a driver of patriotism and innovation

On Friday, August 22, 2025, Ouagadougou hosted a major event dedicated to education: the national celebration of Excellence in Education Day. Under the leadership of President of Burkina Faso Ibrahim Traoré, the ceremony aimed to honor students and teachers who distinguished themselves through exceptional results, commitment, and dedication to hard work.

This day, now an annual tradition, serves not only as recognition of academic merit but also as a platform to promote civic values and a spirit of innovation among Burkinabe youth. In his speech, the president highlighted the crucial role of education in the social and economic transformation of the country, stressing the need to develop a skilled and committed human resource to ensure the nation’s future.

He congratulated the awardees while emphasizing that excellence should not be limited to academics but should also be civic. He urged teachers to incorporate notions such as patriotism, integrity, and solidarity into their pedagogy from the earliest levels of education. For him, even a few moments of awareness-raising each day can be enough to instill these fundamental values in children.

The Head of State also addressed the challenge of brain drain. He urged Burkinabe students, particularly those benefiting from scholarships to study abroad, not to turn their backs on their country after graduation despite the professional opportunities they might find elsewhere. According to him, the future of Burkina Faso lies in the hands of its youth, who must choose to actively contribute to national development.

Finally, emphasis was placed on the need to promote scientific and technical disciplines. President Ibrahim Traoré encouraged the creation of school laboratories and incubation centers to stimulate local innovation. He also warned of the negative effects of social media, which, if misused, can distract young people from the pursuit of knowledge.

For him, investing in education means investing in the nation’s autonomy by training citizens capable not only of learning but also of producing, inventing, and building a better future.
