Champions League:  Anatoliy Trubin’s header writes Champions League history for Benfica

In a stunning finale in Lisbon, Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin etched his name into football history, scoring a dramatic 98th-minute header to secure a 4-2 victory over Real Madrid and clinch his side’s place in the Champions League knockout rounds.

The goal marked a monumental first: no goalkeeper had ever scored against the 15-time European champions in continental competition.

According to Opta, Trubin also became just the fifth keeper to score in the Champions League era.

The moment of pure pandemonium came after Trubin was sent forward for a last-gasp free-kick.

His powerful bullet header ignited wild celebrations, culminating in a knee slide across the pitch.

The result simultaneously eliminated Marseille, who were poised to advance until the goalkeeper’s intervention.

“I didn’t understand what we needed,” admitted the 24-year-old Trubin afterward. “It’s a crazy moment… something completely new.”

Benfica manager José Mourinho hailed the “fantastic, historic goal,” adding that the victory carried “incredible prestige.”

The win guarantees the progression of Benfica in a narrative only football could provide, sealed by its last-line defender.
