Burkina-Faso: The Russian Embassy reopens in Ouagadougou

After a 31-year hiatus, the Russian Embassy is set to resume its activities in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The Russian Embassy in Burkina Faso officially opens on December 28, as announced by a Russian diplomat in Ivory Coast.

Ambassador Alexeï Saltykov, representing Russia in Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso, will lead the official reopening ceremony in Ouagadougou, joined by Burkinabe officials, representatives from the diplomatic corps of friendly nations, and media.

Despite the physical absence of the Russian Embassy in Burkina Faso for several years, bilateral cooperation in political and economic domains remained uninterrupted between the two countries.

According to Alexeï Saltykov, the embassy’s reopening will breathe new life into bilateral relations, fundamentally changing interaction dynamics and facilitating the development of joint projects.

Notably, one such project includes the construction of a nuclear power plant in collaboration with the Russian company Rosatom.

The reopening of the Russian Embassy marks a significant step in strengthening relations, especially after the second Russia-Africa Forum.

During this forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Burkina Faso’s Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, engaged in in-depth discussions leading to the decision to resume embassy operations.

Bilateral cooperation between Burkina Faso and Russia has evolved in various areas, including security and defense, humanitarian efforts, energy, nuclear initiatives, and culture.

Several diplomats note that Russia genuinely supports African countries in enhancing their sovereignty, security, and economic growth.
