The Champions League group stage kicked off in style as Barcelona claimed a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Newcastle at St James’ Park. The Magpies, driven by an intense pressing game in the opening minutes, created early chances through Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes, but young Barça goalkeeper Joan Garcia stood firm with several crucial saves.
Barcelona gradually found their rhythm, with Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha testing the Newcastle defense. However, it was Marcus Rashford who became the difference-maker. Back on English soil, the former Manchester United forward rose to the occasion. In the 58th minute, Jules Koundé delivered a precise cross that Rashford headed past Nick Pope to open the scoring. Just nine minutes later, Rashford struck again, blasting a thunderous shot off the crossbar and into the net, doubling Barça’s lead.
Newcastle pushed forward but struggled to break through until the final moments. Substitute Jacob Murphy crossed for Anthony Gordon, who pulled one back in the 90th minute, but it proved too late.
Barcelona held on to secure three valuable points, with Rashford deservedly named man of the match. His brace not only silenced critics but also highlighted his importance in the absence of young star Lamine Yamal.
