Sudanese Drama “Cotton Queen” wins top prize at Thessaloniki Film Festival

Suzannah Mirghani’s “Cotton Queen,” a landmark as the first feature filmed by a female Sudanese director, won the Golden Alexander for best feature film at the Thessaloniki Film Festival on Sunday.

The film, an arresting debut, captivated the international jury. American director Elegance Bratton stated the film “blew us all away,” praising its powerful focus on family and community amidst a world of conflict.

Set in a Sudanese cotton village, the story follows Nafisa, a teenager who works in her grandmother’s fields and dreams of her beloved.

Her world is upended by the arrival of a wealthy London entrepreneur, as her family and community begin planning her future without her consent.

Mirghani dedicated the prestigious award to Sudan, which is currently engulfed in a devastating civil war.

She also honored her Sudanese cast and crew, whom she noted are “clinging to survival” and “seeking a way out” amid the ongoing crisis. The win brings international attention to both a significant new cinematic voice and the plight of her homeland.
