2026 World Cup Qualifiers: DR Congo keeps World Cup Dream alive with penalty shootout victory over Nigeria

The Democratic Republic of Congo  (DRC) defeated Nigeria 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Rabat, winning the African World Cup qualifying playoff and advancing to March’s inter-confederation playoffs.

Nigeria started strongly with Frank Onyeka’s deflected strike in the 3rd minute, but DR Congo responded through Meschack Elia’s 32nd-minute equalizer following a swift counterattack.

The match remained deadlocked through extra time despite Congo creating better chances, including a strong penalty appeal when Noah Sadiki was fouled in the box.

The dramatic shootout saw Congolese substitute goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu, introduced just minutes earlier, become the hero with two crucial saves. Captain Chancel Mbemba converted the decisive spot-kick to seal the victory.

This result extends DR Congo’s quest for their first World Cup appearance since 1974, when they competed as Zaire.

They now await Thursday’s draw for the inter-confederation playoffs, where six nations will compete for two final spots at the 2026 tournament in North America.

For Nigeria, the defeat marks a stunning end to their campaign, leaving the six-time World Cup participants eliminated despite being heavily favoured entering the playoff.
