Angola honors Congo’s Sassou N’Guesso for historic role in liberation

Luanda paid a historic tribute this week to Congolese President Denis Sassou N’Guesso. During celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence, President João Lourenço awarded the Congolese leader the Gold Medal, a diploma of honor, and the Gold Class distinction.

These prestigious awards recognize the decisive role played by the Republic of Congo, under President Sassou N’Guesso’s leadership, in Angola’s liberation and stabilization.

The official acknowledgment from the Angolan government honors not only his personal actions but also those of his predecessor, President Marien Ngouabi.

It solidifies the essential contribution of the People’s Republic of Congo as a steadfast sanctuary and supporter for Angolan liberation movements fighting Portuguese colonial rule.

President Sassou N’Guesso’s commitment to peace in Angola was particularly evident in 1986 while he chaired the Organization of African Unity (OAU).

His active mediation led to the historic conference in Brazzaville on December 22, 1988, which resulted in the signing of decisive peace agreements.

These accords paved the way for the withdrawal of Cuban and South African forces from Angolan territory, ending years of conflict and allowing Angola to consolidate its independence.

In his acceptance speech, the Congolese leader expressed gratitude to President Lourenço and the Angolan people, reiterating his commitment to continue fighting to help other African peoples conquer their freedom.

He humbly praised the unwavering friendship between the Angolan and Congolese peoples, forged in common struggles for the continent’s liberation.

This Angolan distinction crowns a diplomatic career dedicated to conflict resolution and the promotion of stability in Africa.

It serves as a reminder that Denis Sassou N’Guesso stands among the few African leaders who have devoted a essential part of their actions to the pacification of the continent.
