FECAFOOT/Cameroon: Samuel Eto’o re-elected amidst institutional tensions

Samuel Eto’o has been re-elected as president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) for a second four-year term, despite facing significant institutional opposition. The elective General Assembly, held on November 29, 2025, in Mbankomo, saw the former Barcelona star run unopposed.

The vote resulted in an overwhelming endorsement, with Eto’o securing 85 votes from the 87 delegates, a 97.70% approval rate. This decisive victory underscores his continued strong support within the federation’s structures.

However, the election was shadowed by a public dispute with the Ministry of Sports (Minsep), which had opposed the vote and called for the General Assembly to be cancelled.

In a significant move, the Ministry of Territorial Administration (Minat) overruled this objection, allowing the assembly to proceed.

This clash highlights a deepening institutional conflict within Cameroon’s sports governance.

Eto’o’s renewed mandate comes with the pressing challenge of revitalizing Cameroonian football, a task underscored by the national team’s recent failure to qualify for the upcoming World Cup.

His second term begins with a clear internal mandate but within a contentious political landscape.
