Niger: Niamey rewards patriotism and citizenship at the start of 2026

The Managing Administrator of the City of Niamey, Colonel Boubacar Soumana Garantché, presided over a recognition ceremony in honor of deserving citizens and businesses on Wednesday, January 7. This distinction aims to commend their acts of citizenship and patriotism over the past year.

The event began with a review of the capital’s achievements in 2025. Colonel Garantché highlighted the collective efforts to clean up the city, major infrastructure projects for roads and public lighting, as well as a remarkable mobilization in defense of national sovereignty and the identity of  Niamey.

The resource mobilization initiative “Naney-yarda” was also cited as a successful civic endeavor.

The Governor of the Niamey Region, Major General Assoumane Abdou Harouna, present at the ceremony, praised this initiative. “Since the events of July 26, 2023, the Niamey Region has become a model in terms of patriotic mobilization,” he stated. He emphasized the importance of observing and valuing positive actions by citizens to foster a civic spirit.

Addressing the youth in particular, Governor Harouna underscored their central role in nation-building.

“No one can love Niger like the Nigeriens. Niger will be built by Nigeriens,” he affirmed, calling for the awareness and engagement of every citizen.

He added that education must be accompanied by civic-mindedness and patriotism to ensure authentic and sovereign development.

Looking ahead, Colonel Garantché announced the official launch, on January 17, 2026, of commemorative activities for the centenary of the City of Niamey, marking a new chapter for the capital.

In closing, the authorities presented certificates of recognition to several individuals, public and private companies, as well as media organizations.

This ceremony aimed to symbolize the institutions’ gratitude toward those who contribute, through their daily actions, to the harmonious development and pride of Niamey.
