Music/ Nigeria dominates Afrima awards with Burna Boy, Rema leading sweep

Nigerian artists delivered a commanding performance at the 9th All Africa Music Awards (Afrima) in Lagos, capturing the ceremony’s top honors and underscoring the genre’s continental supremacy.

Global icon Burna Boy secured the prestigious Album of the Year for No Sign of Weakness and shared the Best African Collaboration award with compatriot Shallipopi, who also won Song of the Year.

Leading the night’s tally was Rema, crowned Artiste of the Year while also winning Best Male Artiste in West Africa and Best African Artiste in RnB/Soul.

The awards highlighted both established and emerging talent. Veteran rapper Phyno won Best African Artiste in Hip-Hop, while Qing Madi was named Most Promising Artiste. Yemi Alade won for Best Soundtrack.

While the evening spotlighted Nigeria’s musical powerhouse status, pan-African recognition included wins for Senegal’s Bakhaw Dioum (Songwriter of the Year), Algeria’s DJ Moh Green (DJ of the Year), and regional best artiste awards for Ghana, South Africa, and Tanzania.

The sweep cements Afrobeats’ relentless global ascent, with Burna Boy’s album victory reaffirming his role as a defining ambassador of the sound.
