Togo: Government responds to social Media rumors of abductions, launches investigation

The Togolese government has responded firmly to the spread of alarming information on social media regarding alleged cases of abductions and disturbing disappearances of young people across the country. The authorities have stepped forward to reassure the population and clarify the measures being taken.

A special investigative commission was established as early as January 24, 2026, to verify the facts and elucidate the reported situations.

Operating under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor at the Lomé High Court, this body is working diligently to conduct an in-depth examination of all cases mentioned on digital platforms.

The stated objective of the Authorities is twofold: to establish the precise reality of the facts and to identify, where applicable, those responsible.

This transparent approach aims to shed full light on situations that are fueling legitimate public concern.

The government is also calling on the population to exercise caution regarding unverified information circulating on social networks.

It urges citizens to rely on official information channels and to report any suspicious facts to the competent authorities rather than spreading unfounded rumors.

This official communication demonstrates the determination of the  Togolese authorities  to address  the security  concerns of  the citizens with seriousness.
