Togo: Government cracks down on road safety issues
Faced with a worrying resurgence in road traffic accidents, Togolese authorities are taking action. Driven by the initiative of the President of the Council, Faure Gnassingbé, the government has ordered the deployment of a special operation to strengthen road safety on the country’s major highways.
This initiative aims to put an end to the reckless driving behavior that continues to claim lives every day.
Far from being a simple one-off action, it is part of an overall effort to restore discipline behind the wheel and transform roads into safe spaces rather than places of mourning.
Stricter checks are now being carried out to target risky behavior. Law enforcement officers are being mobilized to penalize drivers who take liberties with the highway code, endangering their own lives and those of other road users.
Combating overloading is one of the priorities. These overloaded or poorly secured vehicles represent a permanent danger on the roads, and the authorities intend to crack down on this practice.
Emphasis is also being placed on strict compliance with rules for two-wheelers, who are particularly vulnerable.
Wearing a helmet is becoming compulsory and will be enforced, as will respect for traffic lights.
These are firm but necessary measures to reverse the trend and save lives on Togolese roads.
