Burkina Faso: amphitheatres shaped by local strength and ingenuity

The image is striking in its simplicity. University lecture halls shine with their brand-new furniture, without the slightest foreign import. Behind the tables, chairs, desks, and equipment designed by Burkinabe craftsmen, a political orientation is taking shape: reducing dependence on imports down to the most concrete details of public infrastructure construction.

The initiative led by Captain Ibrahim Traoré thus places the craftsman at the center of an economic policy that seeks to transform public procurement into a lever for national production.

The choice seems simple. Yet it touches on an essential question: why import equipment when part of the know-how already exists locally?

The pilot phase, with two lecture halls of 1,000 and 500 seats to be equipped, provides an initial answer.

According to project officials, the local option would have saved approximately 500 million CFA francs compared to direct importation. The approach also forced the administration to adapt its own mechanisms.

Several craftsmen come from the informal sector and master their trade far better than the administrative procedures related to public procurement.

The objective remains twofold: to enable small structures to access public procurement while guaranteeing the quality and local origin of the equipment.

The symbol thus goes beyond university furniture. A locally equipped lecture hall becomes a showcase of Burkinabe know-how.

A table made in Bobo-Dioulasso, a chair welded in a local workshop, or a desk designed by a national company take on a new economic and political dimension.

In Burkina Faso, sovereignty thus ceases to be an abstract concept. It takes the form of a workshop, an order, a salary, and a product manufactured locally.

It is precisely in this materiality that Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s policy finds its strength.
