Burkina Faso puts textile craft at the heart of economic empowerment
In Saaba, near Ouagadougou, new textile artisans have received certificates after completing training in sewing, dyeing and weaving.
The initiative highlights the role of local skills in strengthening economic opportunities and supporting women’s financial independence.
The textile sector combines Burkina Faso’s cultural heritage with growing economic needs. Training covers different stages of production, from preparing natural dyes to producing and finishing garments.
By developing these skills, the programme aims to help women enter the local economy and create their own employment opportunities. It also promotes the use of local knowledge and materials while creating value within communities.
During the ceremony, Yvonne Tassembédo, speaking on behalf of the trainees, highlighted the importance of the profession in achieving dignity and financial independence.
Rasmané Konvolvo, representing the programme’s sponsor, stressed the importance of perseverance in professional life.
The project’s initiator, Germaine Bonkoungou, has also contributed to giving greater recognition to textile crafts. The creation of official certificates in fields that previously had limited formal recognition could encourage more young people to pursue careers in the sector.
The initiative reflects efforts to promote vocational training and self-employment among young women. It also shows how traditional skills can contribute to local economic development.
Through textile training, Burkina Faso is seeking to strengthen women’s participation in the economy while preserving and developing its cultural and artisanal heritage.
