Burkina Faso: Government officials call for a more disciplined public administration
Burkina Faso held its 12th monthly military tribute to Thomas Sankara on October 1, 2026, at the Thomas Sankara Memorial in Ouagadougou. The ceremony brought together civilian and military officials, as well as public servants.
The event has become a regular commemoration since the authorities introduced the ceremony in 2025. This latest edition also focused on the role of public administration in the country’s current political and institutional programme.
Meanwhile, Communication Minister Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo used a railway metaphor to describe the administration’s role. He compared Burkina Faso to a train and public administration to the rails needed to keep it moving.
He called on public employees to show greater commitment, discipline and patriotism. His remarks linked administrative performance to the government’s broader political agenda under Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
For his part, Minister for Public Servants Mathias Traoré focused on standards within government services. He urged officials to reject absenteeism, corruption, negligence and practices that weaken public institutions.
He also argued that public employees should see themselves as servants of citizens rather than owners of public services. According to him, effective administration requires professionalism, accountability and a focus on the public interest.
The ceremony also served as an opportunity to reflect on Thomas Sankara’s political legacy. Mathias Traoré called for those values to be expressed through everyday conduct rather than remaining limited to commemorative events.
The October ceremony therefore combined remembrance with a message about administrative reform. The authorities are seeking to place greater emphasis on public-sector performance, integrity and service to citizens.
