FC Porto Edges out Arsenal with 1-0 Victory in Champions League Clash

The first leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 continued this Wednesday. At the Estádio do Dragão, FC Porto faced Arsenal. In this reunion-themed encounter, FC Porto narrowly emerged victorious with a score of one goal to nil. Fourteen years after their last meeting in the 2009/10 Champions League Round of 16, Porto and Arsenal find themselves facing off once again. Back then, Arsène Wenger’s Gunners secured a 6-2 total victory.

During a rather uneventful first half, neither Arsenal nor FC Porto managed to score.

Despite Arsenal holding the majority of possession (69%), the Gunners lacked creativity to threaten the well-organized defense of the Northern club.

The best chances fell to the Dragons, particularly with Galeno in the 21st minute and Evanilson in the 40th minute. The first half ended with a score of 0-0.

Upon returning from the break, Mikel Arteta’s men, like in the first half, created good opportunities but failed to breach FC Porto’s defense.

Sergio Conceição’s charges maintained their discipline and commitment, successfully thwarting Arsenal and frustrating their attempts.

Throughout the match, the Dragons put up a strong resistance, and Arsenal failed to register a single shot on target.

FC Porto’s resilience paid off in the dying moments. Galeno (90+4′, 1-0), the Brazilian winger, opened the scoring with a superb strike from approximately 25 meters, slightly to the left, beating Raya without being bothered by Rice. The final score was 1-0.

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta are now obliged to seek victory in the second leg of the round of 16.

The return leg is scheduled for Tuesday, March 12 (21:00) at the Emirates Stadium.
