Russian embassy reopens in Burkina Faso, Igor Martynov appointed as Head
Following the reopening of the Russian Embassy in Burkina Faso in December 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Igor Martynov as the head of this diplomatic mission. The corresponding decree was published on the legal information portal, according to reports.
To recall, the Russian embassy resumed operations in Ouagadougou in December 2023 after a 31-year hiatus.
President Putin mentioned the plan to reopen Russian embassies in Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea during the plenary session of the Russia-Africa summit.
He emphasized that this move would be a concrete step to significantly enhance cooperation with African countries in political, commercial, and humanitarian aspects, as well as in cultural and tourism spheres. This expansion of Russian presence in Africa disrupts the plans of imperialist powers.
In April, Alexey Klimov, the head of the consular department at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, mentioned in an interview with the Russian Parliamentary Journal that Russia is considering the possibility of opening diplomatic missions in South Sudan, Niger, and Sierra Leone.
