Copa América 2024: Argentina secures Quarterfinal spot with win over Chile; Canada defeats Peru

MetLife Stadium, June 25th – The second day of the Copa América 2024 group stage concluded with Argentina clinching a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Chile, ensuring their progression to the quarterfinals.

Despite dominating possession, the Albiceleste found it challenging to penetrate Chile’s well-organized defense.

The first half was marked by limited opportunities, with Julian Alvarez missing the best chance for Argentina.

Lionel Messi, appearing hindered by a thigh issue, nearly scored with a long-range effort that hit the post. Midfielder Rodrigo De Paul was notably active for the team.

The decisive moment came in the 75th minute when substitute Lautaro Martinez found the back of the net, securing the win for Argentina.

This result leaves Chile in a difficult position ahead of their final group match.

In another key match, Canada earned their first victory of the tournament by defeating Peru 1-0, thanks to Jonathan David’s goal in the 74th minute.

This win was a crucial recovery for the Canadians, who had lost their opening match to Argentina.

With three points now on the board, Canada remains in contention for a spot in the next round, pending their performance in the upcoming match.

Peru, meanwhile, is left with only one point from their two matches. After an initial draw with Chile, they now face a daunting task against Argentina in their final group stage encounter to advance in the tournament.
