Niger – Benin: Towards an end to the crisis between the two countries!

On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) announced the departure of a high-ranking delegation to Cotonou.

This mission, requested by former Presidents Yayi Boni and Nicéphore Soglo and endorsed by Beninese President Patrice Talon, aims to address key issues of mutual interest between Niger and Benin.

Leading the delegation is Brigadier General Mohamed Toumba, State Minister, accompanied by Dr. Soumana Boubacar, Minister and Chief of Staff of the Nigerien Presidency.

The delegation also includes representatives from the National Gendarmerie, the National Guard, the National Police, and the Directorate General of External Documentation and Security.

The primary goal of this mission is to discuss several important topics to improve bilateral relations.

Recently, the relationship between Niger and Benin has been strained. To mitigate tensions, the two former presidents visited Niamey on June 24 to meet with Niger’s President Abdourahamane Tiani.

This visit aimed to initiate a dialogue to mend the fractured relations between the two West African nations.

Historically, Benin and Niger have shared dynamic economic exchanges, robust cross-border cooperation, and joint infrastructure projects.

These close economic ties have promoted mutual development and regional stability until the onset of the current crisis.

The hope is that the ongoing discussions will lead to a normalization of the situation, which currently exerts economic pressure on the citizens of both countries.

Successful diplomatic efforts would reinvigorate the strong economic relationship that has long benefited both nations.
