Nigeria’s Women’s basketball team makes history by reaching Olympic Quarterfinals

In a groundbreaking achievement, Nigeria’s women’s basketball team has become the first African team, male or female, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Olympic basketball tournament.

Their 79-70 victory over Canada on Sunday was highlighted by Zinna Kalu’s impressive 21-point performance.

Arriving in France with the goal of securing their first Olympic victory since the 2004 Athens Games, the Nigerian team exceeded expectations by winning two games in the group stage.

Their historic progression to the quarterfinals marks a significant milestone in the history of African basketball.

Canada, ranked fifth globally, failed to win any of their three matches, exiting the tournament earlier than anticipated. This result underscores the unpredictable nature of Olympic competition.

Meanwhile, five other teams have clinched their spots in the quarterfinals: The United States, Spain, Serbia, France, and Germany.

The United States is particularly noteworthy as they aim for an unprecedented eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal.

The final match of the group stage between Australia and host nation France will determine the complete quarterfinal lineup.

The draw for the quarterfinal pairings will take place afterward, as the Nigerian team awaits to learn their next opponents in their historic Olympic journey.
