K-pop star Taeil exits NCT amid sexual crime Allegations, label confirms

SEOUL, August 28, 2024 — Taeil, a prominent member of the K-pop sensation NCT, has officially parted ways with the group following allegations of involvement in a sexual crime. SM Entertainment, the 30-year-old singer’s agency, announced his departure on Wednesday, acknowledging the gravity of the situation.

In a statement released on X (formerly Twitter), SM Entertainment revealed that Taeil, whose real name is Moon Tae-il, had been accused in a criminal case related to a sexual offense. The label did not disclose specific details about the allegations but emphasized the seriousness of the matter, leading to the decision that Taeil could no longer remain active with NCT.

“Taeil has been accused in a criminal case related to a sexual crime,” the statement read. “Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, we have determined that he will not continue his activities with the team.”

Taeil has yet to issue a public response to the accusations. SM Entertainment stated that the singer is fully cooperating with the ongoing police investigation and assured that more information would be provided as the case develops.

The Bangbae Police Station in Seoul has confirmed that it is investigating Taeil in connection with a sexual crime, as reported by South Korean media. However, attempts to reach the police for further comment were unsuccessful.

Taeil joined NCT, short for Neo Culture Technology, when the group debuted in 2016. The group, known for its innovative and experimental approach to music, has become a global phenomenon, with some of its releases making their way onto Billboard charts.

NCT operates with a unique structure, boasting over two dozen members who are divided into several subunits, including NCT 127, NCT Dream, and NCT U.

Taeil had recently been active in NCT 127, one of the group’s most successful subunits. His departure marks a significant shift for the band, which has played a key role in the rise of K-pop on the global stage.

This isn’t the first time Taeil has made headlines. In August 2023, he was involved in a motorcycle accident in downtown Seoul, which led to a temporary suspension of his activities as he focused on recovery.
