AES – China: A strategic alliance for the development and security of the Sahel at FOCAC 2024

The 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), held in Beijing, marked a significant moment for the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). On September 3, 2024, Colonel Assimi Goïta, the President of Mali’s transition and the current AES Chair, met with the Prime Ministers of Burkina Faso and Niger, Apollinaire Joachim Kyélem de Tambèla and Ali Lamine Zeine.

 

This high-level meeting underscored the unified stance of the AES nations as they sought to present a cohesive vision at the major international forum.

 

The discussions focused on shared priorities for the AES countries, emphasizing the attraction of Chinese investments in crucial sectors such as infrastructure, energy, mining, and security.

 

The meeting highlighted the vital role of Sino-African cooperation in addressing the security and economic challenges facing the Sahel region.

 

Ali Lamine Zeine, the Prime Minister of Niger, noted that the FOCAC presents a unique opportunity for the AES to enhance economic ties with China and secure essential resources for regional development.

 

By presenting a united front, the AES nations aim to leverage this strategic partnership to its fullest potential.

 

At the FOCAC, the Sahel States Confederation is positioning itself as a key player on the global stage, illustrating that unity and collaboration are critical for advancing common interests and ensuring a prosperous future for the region.
