Nations League returns: Portugal triumphs over Croatia, Spain Held by Serbia

After a brief hiatus following Euro 2024, the UEFA Nations League resumed action on Thursday night with several European heavyweights taking the stage. Portugal kicked off their campaign with a hard-fought victory over Croatia, while Spain, the reigning European champions, were held to a frustrating draw against Serbia.

Ronaldo’s 900th Career Goal Secures Portugal’s Win Over Croatia

Portugal, led by veteran star Cristiano Ronaldo, opened their Nations League journey with a 2-1 win against Croatia. Roberto Martinez’s side made a strong start, with Diogo Dalot putting the Portuguese ahead as early as the 7th minute.

Ronaldo then doubled the lead in the 34th minute, scoring the 900th goal of his illustrious career, a milestone that further cements his legendary status in the world of football.

Despite a Dalot own goal just before halftime, Croatia couldn’t find an equalizer, allowing Portugal to secure their first win in the group.

Spain Stumbles in stalemate against Serbia

Spain’s highly anticipated debut in the Nations League was less successful, as the European champions were held to a 0-0 draw by a resolute Serbian side.

Despite dominating possession, Spain struggled to break through the Serbian defense, leaving them frustrated and forced to settle for a single point.

Denmark and Poland record important wins

Elsewhere, Denmark enjoyed a smooth 2-0 victory over Switzerland, with a dominant performance that underscored their ambitions in the competition.

Meanwhile, Poland edged out Scotland in a thrilling encounter, winning 3-2 thanks to a late goal in stoppage time.

The Nations League is back in full swing, with Europe’s top teams eager to make their mark in the competition, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting tournament.
