DRC / Extraordinary Council of Ministers: Towards a stronger budget and strategic reforms

On Monday, September 9, 2024, President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo convened an extraordinary cabinet meeting to address several pressing national issues.

The agenda included urgent matters such as the Mpox health crisis and an attempted jailbreak at Makala Central Prison.

However, the primary focus was on reviewing the 2024 supplementary budget and preparing the national budget for 2025.

The State Minister for Budget presented the key elements of the revised budget for the current year and outlined projections for the upcoming year.

The new budget forecasts a substantial increase in expected revenues, attributed to ongoing resource mobilization efforts and support from the new IMF program.

This budgetary momentum reflects President Tshisekedi’s commitment to significantly improving the living conditions of Congolese citizens.

This cabinet meeting is especially significant as it precedes the September parliamentary session, where the budget will be examined and adopted by both houses of Parliament.

The forthcoming budget must align with the government’s priorities for the year ahead while building on the reforms already underway.

Additionally, the reassessment of mining contracts with Sicomines is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the country’s infrastructure and boosting budgetary resources. This development aims to better allocate resources for national growth and development.
