South Africa/Pravin Gordhan, former South African Finance Minister passes away at 75

Pravin Gordhan, South Africa’s former finance minister and a key figure in the fight against apartheid, has died at the age of 75. His family confirmed his death early Friday morning, following a short battle with cancer.

Gordhan, who entered the political arena during South Africa’s transition to democracy in 1994, held several crucial roles within the government over the years.

He was best known for his tenure as finance minister, a position he occupied during two critical periods in South Africa’s post-apartheid history.

His influence was instrumental in navigating the country through financial challenges and shaping its economic landscape.

His family shared that Gordhan died peacefully in hospital, surrounded by his family, friends, and comrades from the anti-apartheid movement. “He passed away in the early hours, with his loved ones and longtime comrades by his side,” the family said in a statement.

Gordhan had announced his retirement from politics earlier this year in May, signaling the end of a career marked by service and dedication to South Africa.

He is survived by his wife Vanitha and their daughters Anisha and Priyesha. His passing leaves behind a legacy of public service and a deep commitment to the nation’s democratic journey.
