Culture:”Iloya” Captivates Lagos audience with a powerful exploration of nigerian challenges

Lagos has been abuzz with excitement following the dramatic debut of “Iloya,” a compelling new play by Segun LafUp Ogundipe. The title, which means “the journey begins” in Yoruba, reflects the play’s exploration of the trials faced by many young Nigerians.

Set in the bustling city of Lagos, “Iloya” tells the poignant story of Makan, portrayed by Ogundipe, a recent graduate grappling with severe unemployment and housing shortages.

After securing a job in the banking sector, Makan’s hopes are dashed when his girlfriend, Shade, betrays him, leaving him disillusioned and struggling to navigate Lagos’s chaotic landscape.

As Makan encounters repeated scams and disappointments, he joins the growing trend of Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad, known locally as “Japa.”

Ogundipe’s performance brings to light the broader issue of Africa’s brain drain and the challenges of finding viable solutions within the continent.

“This play, ‘Iloya,’ provides a unique and impactful commentary on economic hardship, brain drain, and the relentless pursuit of self-improvement,” Ogundipe stated. Audience member Sunkanmi noted, “It offers a powerful political perspective that resonates deeply with many people in Nigeria today.”

The play’s journey began in Cape Town and Sheffield before returning to its roots in Ibadan, Nigeria, for a special performance. “Iloya” is slated for a UK tour in summer 2025.

The production underscores the message that while leaving one’s country might seem tempting, fulfilling one’s ambitions is attainable with the right opportunities at home.
