Togo: Towards a new stage of decentralisation for optimised local governance

As part of ongoing reforms to enhance governance, President Faure Gnassingbé continues to prioritize decentralization, a key element of his administration’s agenda. The latest step in this process was marked by the launch of a technical meeting on September 17, 2024, in Adétikopé, aimed at standardizing administrative and financial management within local governments.

Organized by the Ministry of Territorial Administration, this initiative seeks to provide local authorities with clear organizational structures and procedural manuals. The goal is to streamline operations in Togo’s communes and regions, ensuring that local governments function more efficiently in response to the needs of their citizens.

According to Esso Koudjoou, the ministry’s secretary-general, these tools are critical for defining roles within local administrations and fostering trust between elected officials and the public.

Over the course of five days, experts and stakeholders will work in various commissions to refine existing projects and propose new strategies. The final recommendations will be submitted for government approval, signaling a significant milestone in the decentralization process.

This move reflects President Gnassingbé’s commitment to strengthening local governance and improving the delivery of public services. By empowering local administrations, the government aims to promote inclusive and sustainable development across the country.
