Sustainable development in Burkina Faso: Success of the 2nd edition of the Research Results Dissemination Day by CEDRES

On 24 November 2023 in Ouagadougou, the Center for Economic and Social Documentation and Research (CEDRES) successfully held its second research dissemination day. The aim was to present the results of research carried out by CEDRES researchers in key areas such as women’s empowerment, financial inclusion, energy, mining and migrant remittances.

The research focused on sectors of major interest to the government of Burkina Faso, and the Director of CEDRES, Pr Youmanli Ouoba, stressed the importance of avoiding duplication of effort by inviting executives from different ministries to discover the centre’s achievements.

The choice to focus on local issues is intended to encourage researchers to contribute actively to the specific challenges facing Burkina Faso.

Five papers were presented at the event. The first explored the effects of empowering rural women farmers on adaptation to climate change in Burkina Faso.

The second looked at the adoption of solar photovoltaic technology in rural areas. The third looked at barriers to women’s financial inclusion, while the fourth explored the relationship between migrant remittances and private investment.

The final paper assessed the economic sustainability of gold mining in Burkina Faso.

On the first theme, Dr Habi Ky emphasised that empowering women helps them to adapt to the effects of climate change.

She identified areas where women are advantaged, such as their contribution to family income, but also areas where they are disadvantaged, such as access to productive resources and participation in decision-making.

In conclusion, the day demonstrated CEDRES’ commitment to research for the socio-economic development of Burkina Faso, with concrete recommendations for improving women’s empowerment, including policies for access to credit and land, and encouraging women to take up positions of responsibility in community organisations.
