Niger: AfDB grants a loan of $511 million for priority projects

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $511 million loan for Niger to support four key strategic programs in 2025. This funding targets essential needs in water supply, sanitation, agriculture, and disaster risk management, all of which are crucial sectors for the country’s development.

The first portion of the financing, totaling $119.84 million, will be dedicated to water supply and sanitation infrastructure in the cities of Zinder, Mirriah, and surrounding areas.

This project aims to enhance access to clean drinking water, which is expected to improve health and overall quality of life for the local population.

Another significant portion of $93.21 million will go toward the “Youth Agripreneurship Development Program,” a bold initiative to support young entrepreneurs in agriculture.

By fostering rural entrepreneurship and encouraging agricultural innovation, this program seeks to boost job creation and stimulate local economic growth.

Additionally, $13.31 million is earmarked for the “Disaster Risk Management” initiative (ADRIFi-Niger Phase II), a critical program aimed at strengthening Niger’s resilience to natural disasters and climate-related shocks.

The agreement’s signing was warmly welcomed by the Nigerien government, with officials gathered under the leadership of Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine.
