Burkina Faso: Focus on some of the major decisions taken by the Council of Ministers on 26 December

During the final Council of Ministers meeting of 2024, chaired by Burkina Faso’s President Captain Ibrahim Traoré, several pivotal decisions were made to strengthen institutions and enhance governance in the country.

Overhaul of Agricultural Chambers

The council approved a decree to dissolve the Assemblies of the Agricultural Chambers, citing operational inefficiencies and the failure to hold elections for their renewal.

In their place, regional chambers will now operate under the supervision of regional agricultural directorates.

A comprehensive structural reform is also planned to align agricultural governance with the president’s vision for the sector.

Reforms in Justice

To address challenges within the judicial system, the council adopted revisions to the Criminal Procedure Code, reflecting constitutional amendments made in 2023.

Additionally, a presidential pardon was announced, targeting the issue of overcrowded prisons.

The initiative will benefit 1,200 inmates, with approximately 400 receiving complete sentence reductions.

These measures highlight the government’s commitment to a more efficient and compassionate justice system.

Revamping sports Infrastructure

A report on the rehabilitation of the Stade du 4 Août was also approved. The project, estimated at over 4.3 billion FCFA, will focus on replacing the turf and upgrading the athletics track.

President Traoré emphasized the importance of accountability for past shortcomings in the stadium’s maintenance and renovations.

These decisions collectively reflect a strong resolve to address institutional challenges, promote justice, and invest in infrastructure to meet the needs of the people of Burkina Faso.
