DRC: CSAC denounces French media’s editorial choices on the crisis in the East

The Superior Council of Audiovisual and Communication (CSAC) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has strongly criticized the editorial choices of RFI, France 24, and TV5MONDE regarding their coverage of events in the country’s eastern region. In a statement by Christian Bosembe, a prominent CSAC member, these French media outlets were accused of bias and downplaying the achievements of the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC).

“I note with regret that some media, such as RFI, TV5MONDE, and France 24, report alleged advances of the terrorists while ignoring the achievements of the FARDC,” Bosembe stated on his X account.

While reaffirming the DRC’s commitment to freedom of expression and information, he condemned what he termed “glorification of terrorism,” labeling it as incompatible with responsible journalism.

These criticisms come against the backdrop of a volatile situation in eastern DRC, marked by the active presence of M23 rebels.

Congolese authorities assert that the FARDC is conducting brave operations to protect civilians and repel armed groups, efforts they claim are largely overlooked by certain international media outlets.

The CSAC has called for balanced reporting that reflects the realities on the ground.

The council argues that such fairness is crucial to countering the propaganda of armed groups, which often manipulate media narratives to strengthen their influence.

This friction between the Congolese government and foreign media highlights a broader issue of how African conflicts are portrayed internationally.

Through its institutions, the DRC is demanding fairer coverage that recognizes the efforts of its national forces and respects the sensitivities of affected communities.
