Burkina Faso: Call for mobilisation on 28 January, a strong commitment from the peoples of the AES

On Friday, January 24, 2025, civic watchdog organizations held a press conference in Ouagadougou to outline the plans for a major demonstration set to take place on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.

This landmark date will commemorate the first anniversary of the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from ECOWAS, as well as the official establishment of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

A symbol of sovereignty and self-determination

Through this mobilization, the civic organizations from the three nations aim to reaffirm their unwavering support for the leaders of the AES and to celebrate a pivotal milestone in their pursuit of sovereignty and self-determination.

The organizers regard this day as a victory over what they see as an oppressive system, calling for a massive turnout to honor what they describe as the “great liberation” from the chains of servitude.

A call for a sovereign Africa

The event carries significant weight across the African continent, with organizers emphasizing that the decision to exit ECOWAS is a bold step toward a more sovereign Africa.

They view it as a crucial move to establish a political and economic governance model that prioritizes the well-being and aspirations of the AES member states’ populations.

Citizens are urged to remain committed to building a future rooted in self-reliance and solidarity.

Unity and hope for the future

The people of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger are encouraged to fully participate in this historic moment. The demonstration not only celebrates the collective progress made over the past year but also symbolizes the hope for a brighter future. It reflects a shared vision of a stronger, more resilient Africa that places its people at the heart of its development journey.
