Xavi Simons: A Profitable exit for PSG, A Record signing for Leipzig

Paris Saint-Germain and RB Leipzig have officially sealed a major deal: Xavi Simons has permanently joined Leipzig. After a successful loan spell in the Bundesliga since the summer of 2023, the Dutch attacking midfielder will no longer wear the PSG jersey, with the transfer valued at €80 million, including easily achievable bonuses.

A Smart Financial move for PSG

Signed in 2023 for €4 million through a buy-back clause from PSV Eindhoven, Simons was always a strategic investment for PSG—either as a valuable squad addition or a lucrative asset.

His breakout season in the Eredivisie, where he tallied 22 goals and 12 assists, showcased his immense potential.

He carried that form into the Bundesliga, recording 10 goals and 15 assists in 43 matches during his first season with Leipzig.

The German club attempted to sign him outright last summer, but another loan was agreed upon before the transfer was finalized six months later.

This deal marks PSG’s second-biggest sale in history, behind only Neymar’s €90 million move to Al-Hilal.

The substantial fee not only boosts the club’s financial balance but also facilitates other operations, such as Milan Skriniar’s departure to Fenerbahçe.

Leipzig’s record-breaking investment

For Leipzig, this transfer is the most expensive in club history, surpassing the €40 million spent on Loïs Openda.

The move underscores Leipzig’s commitment to strengthening their squad with top young talent, and Simons is now set to be a cornerstone of their ambitious project.
