Africa: Togo in the digital era, a government closer to its citizens

Togo has taken a significant leap forward in modernizing its public administration through the rapid digitalization of its services. The introduction of the Public Services Portal in 2022 marked a turning point, leading to a dramatic increase in the number of citizens utilizing online platforms for administrative procedures.

By 2024, the platform had processed over 400,000 requests, a substantial jump from the 100,000 recorded in 2023.

This surge highlights the growing preference among Togolese citizens for digital solutions when handling administrative tasks.

The portal offers a wide range of services, including the issuance of civil status documents, administrative certificates, and other essential paperwork.

It also streamlines business-related processes, such as company registration and commercial activity management, as well as services connected to security, energy, and the environment, making interactions between citizens and the government more efficient.

The shift to digital platforms has brought numerous benefits, including significant time savings, reduced travel expenses, and the elimination of long queues.

Additionally, it has enhanced transparency in the handling of administrative matters, fostering greater trust in public institutions.

Recognizing the importance of digital transformation, the Togolese government has outlined plans to expand the initiative in 2025.

This includes integrating new services, bolstering cybersecurity measures, and prioritizing digital inclusion to ensure that rural populations can also access these services.

By committing to this digital overhaul, Togo is emerging as a trailblazer in Africa’s administrative modernization efforts, paving the way for a more efficient, transparent, and inclusive governance system.
