TOGO: 3,354 recruits to strengthen the ranks of the army

In a sub-region suffering from the threat of terrorism, particularly in the north of the country, the Togolese Armed Forces (FAT) are increasing their numbers with new recruits. A total of 3,354 new candidates will join the ranks of the army at the end of a training course scheduled for 4 December in Kara.

Prior to the training, 3,354 candidates were selected in the various prefectures on the basis of a general recruitment held from 16 to 23 October 2023.

The gathering under the flag expected for the new recruits on December 4 should take place under the sign of discipline.

Indeed, the military authorities have already warned that anyone failing to attend will be deemed to have resigned.

«Candidates selected in the various prefectures during general recruitment will have to report to the National Training Centre of the Togolese Armed Forces (CNI/FAT) in Kara from Monday 04 December 2023 at 6 a.m. for the start of their military training», said the Ministry of the Armed Forces.

Saddened by the trial

A few days ago, the Togolese army was in the spotlight with the Madjoulba trial, the final verdict of which was the conviction of the former Chief of General Staff of the Togolese Armed Forces (FAT), found guilty of conspiracy against State security, complicity in murder and obstruction of justice.

As a result, General Abalo Kadangha was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment, but benefited from extenuating circumstances.

Songuine Yendoukoa, the driver of the late Bitala Madjoula, was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment.

According to the military prosecutor’s office, he was responsible for the murder of his boss.

Lieutenant-Colonel Ali Kodjo also received a 15-year prison sentence. Those convicted were dismissed from their posts and stripped of their military rank.

In the wake of this case, there is also a need to give a new face to the army with new recruits against the backdrop of a reshuffle within the military command to respond effectively to the current terrorist threat.
